Now is a great time to become an implant dentist. As the public is becoming more educated about dental implants, they are now expecting general dentists to do dental implants. Not only have the public become more aware, but the implant manufacturers have aligned themselves with general dentists and have accepted the fact that they are going to do the bulk of implants here in the next decade.

Our patients are ready for this standard of care and the manufactures are ready to help us provide it. It is our challenge and obligation as dentists to become proficient at providing dental implant care to our patients just like we do any other skill set in general dentistry.

Anyone who is contemplating doing implants in their implants in their practice, there has never been a better time than now to start—your patients are ready for it. Be skeptical about attending educational centers that claim they can teach you everything about implants in a two-day course, also be skeptical of salesman teaching you dental implantology. Your implant education needs to come from clinicians who have the understanding and the competency of implant dentistry.

You should align yourself with someone who can teach you properly and who is able to relate to you. Take the time to research your educational institute, and when the time is right for you, make the investment in yourself and your patients and get the best implant education.

For many years I simply did implants in my own office and the experience was outstanding. I was so gratified by helping patients with dental implants that could not be helped in any other treatment modality. As I continued to place implants it became apparent to some of my friends, that were also dentists, that I was doing things that they were not. Their curiosity brought them to my office on numerous occasions and I had the overwhelming request to start teaching them how to place dental implants.

So one doctor at a time, I would meet with them in their own offices and I would help them place their first implants. Over time they became very appreciative and energetic about expanding their skills to be able to help their patients. It became very apparent that a general dentist that has had significant experience in the dental implant field–particularly in surgery and restoring implants–had an opportunity to teach other colleagues. So about 6 years ago I decided to start WhiteCap Institute and we haven’t looked back since. Over the past 6 years we have had the privilege of teaching, training and mentoring over 1500 dentist from 40 different states. The mission of WhiteCap Institute is to educate dentists on providing the highest standard of patient-centered care.
